IPv4 stands for Internet Protocol version 4. It is still the most popular protocol for communication over the Internet. An IPv4 address is a 32-bit address that identifies a device on a network. It is made of 4 groups of numbers (octets) with up to 3 numbers each.

IPv4 was first described in 1981 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF, RFC 791) and was later adopted by the Department of Defense of The USA and ARPANET.

The problems:

  • IP address exhaustion
  • You can’t add extra parameters
  • No IPsec support by default

  • Simple topology
  • Excellent system support
